catch up 밀린 일을 처리하다, 따라잡다, 근황에 대해 이야기하다

이번 포스팅에서는 catch up의 의미 중 자주 쓰이는 3 가지를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 영영사전풀이와 예문을 함께 보면서 각각의 의미를 익혀보도록 하죠.

 

 

 

1. catch up (on) : 밀린 일을 처리하다

• to do what needs to be done because you have not been able to do it until now.
• If you catch up on an activity that you have not had much time to do recently, you spend time doing it.

첫 번째 의미는 시간이 없어서 또는 다른 이유로 이미 했어야 했는데 여태 하지 못했던 밀린 일을 처리하는 것을 의미합니다. 회사일이 바빠 특정 업무를 catch up 해야 할 때도 있을 테고 또는 휴가 복귀 후에도 catch up 해야겠죠? Catch up 뒤에 어떤 특정 밀린 일을 이야기하고 싶을 때는 on을 묻혀서 catch up on으로 표현할 수 있습니다.

• I was catching up on my reading.
• Since it was raining all weekend, I caught up on my laundary and ironing.
• My son got a flu so I had to take care of him for the last couple of nights so I'm so exhaused now. I'm going to catch up on sleep tonight.

• Last night I caught up on the episodes of some K-dramas.
• I have a lot of work to catch up on.
• The deadline's tomorrow. How are we ever going to catch up in time?

2. catch (someone) up (on) : 근황에 대해 이야기하다

• to find out about things that have happened.
• to give someone the latest news or information about something

정말 오랜만에 만난 친구나 지인과 그동안 어떻게 지냈는지 등 근황에 대해서 이야기할 때 catch up 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다.

• We haven't seen for ages. Let's grab a coffee and catch up!
• Clarice caught me up on all of the office goosip that I missed while on vacation.
• We spent the evening catching up (on each other's news)
• Can anyone catch me up on the latest developments?
• I met my childhood friend to have coffee and catch up.

 

3. catch up (with) : 따라잡다

• to reach the same quality or standard as someone or something else
• To catch up with someone means to reach the same standard, stage, or level that they have reached.
• If you catch up with someone who is in front of you, you reach them by walking faster than they're walking.

'따라잡다'의 의미인데 하나는 물리적으로 나보다 앞서 가고 있는 사람을 따라잡을 때 쓸 수 있고 다른 하나는 예를 들어 나보다 실력이 좋은 직장동료의 업무능력을 따라잡을 때, 또는 나보다 영어를 잘하는 친구를 따라잡는다고 할 때 catch up이라고 할 수 있습니다.

• I ran after her and managed to catch up with her.
• If you miss a lot of classes, it's very difficult to catch up.
• She was walking so fast so I had to run to catch up with her!

어렵지 않은 표현 catch up, 하지만 정말 유용하게 널리 쓰이는 표현이기 때문에 이 세 가지 의미 꼭 익히셔서 실생활에서 유용하게 써먹으실 수 있기를 바랍니다.
