wind down 휴식을 취하다, 서서히 중단하다

이번 포스팅에서는 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 wind down 표현 2가지 의미를 알아보려고 합니다. 시작하기에 앞서 한 가지 흥미로운 점은 wind down에서 wind는 바람(wind)의 /wind-윈드/ 발음이 아닌 /waind-와인드/ 로 발음해야 한다는 것입니다. 자 그럼 시작해 볼까요?

 

 

 

1. Definition of 'wind down' - (힘들었거나 긴장감  이후에) 휴식을 취하다

If you wind down, you relax after doing something that has made you feel tired or tense.

여러분을 피곤하게 하거나 긴장되게 만드는 어떤 일을 하고 나서 릴렉스 하는 것을 window down이라고 합니다.

• When he goes on holiday, it takes him the first couple of days just to wind down.
• I find it difficult to wind down after a day at work.
• I regularly have a drink to wind down.
• I'm thinking of winding down with a good book this weekend.

2. Definition of 'wind down' - 서서히 중단하다(일을 줄여 나가다)

• If a business or organization winds down, or if someone winds it down, the amount of work it does is gradually reduced until it closes completely
• to gradually reduce the work of a business or organization so that it can be closed down completely.

예를 들어서 어떤 조직이나 회사가 wind down 한다는 것은 사업이 철수되는 시점까지 서서히 일을 줄여나가는 것을 의미합니다. 이는 꼭 사업이나 회사 관련 내용뿐 아니라 다른 여러 상황에서도 쓸 수 있습니다. 예를 들어서 인터뷰를 이제 서서히 마무리해야 할 때라고 말하고 싶다라든지(It's time to wind down this interview) 또는 서서히 파티를 마무리하자고 말할 때 이 wind down 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다.

• We need to wind down the wars that we have been engaged in. 

 

한 가지 더 추가하자면 자동차 창문을 내릴 때도 wind down이라고 할 수 있습니다(to make something, especially a car window, move down by turning a handle or pressig a button).
