make out 의 다양한 의미 (이해하다/알아보다/알아듣다 등...)

make out

 

'이해하다/파악하다/(어렵게) 알아보다, 알아듣다, 이해하다,'등을 한 가지 영어 표현로 사용할 수 있을까요? 오늘은 이런 의미를 모두 담고 있는 표현 make out이라는 표현에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. '이해하다'라고 말할 때 'understand'만 사용해오셨다면 오늘 새로운 표현 Get! 하시기 바랍니다.

 

 

 

1. (글씨, 말등을) 알아보다, 알아듣다
(a) to see, hear or understand something or someone with difficulty - Cambridge Dictionary
(b) to be just able to see or hear something - Longman Dictionary
(d) If you make something out, you manage with difficulty to see or hear it. - Collins Dictionary

(Example Sentences)

  • The letters are too small - I can't make them out at all
  • Her handwriting is really bad. It's not clear and I can't make it out.
  • I can't make out what you're saying. Could you turn up the volume?
  • I heard the voices in the conference room, but couldn't make out what they were saying
  • I couldn't make out what she said in the crowd
  • I got a call from a young lady. I couldn't even make out the voice because there's just crying.
  • I could just make out a figure in the darkness -어둠속에서 형체만 알아볼 수 있었다.

2. (어떤 일이 왜 일어났는지등) 상황을 파악/이해하다.
- to understand something, especially the reason why something has happened -

(Example Sentences)

  • How do you make that out? (=what are your reasons for thinking that)?
  • I can't make out what she wants.
  • I can't make out this letter.

 

3. (사람의 성형이나 행동등을) 이해하다
- to understand someone's character and the way they behave.

  • She's a strange person. I can't make her out at all.
  • I couldn't make out why she lied to her boyfriend yesterday.

 

 

 

4. (성공적으로) 잘 해나가다/처리하다 (to progress/do/perform)
- to deal with a situation, usually in a successful way 
- used to ask if somebody managed well or was successful in a particular situation.

  • How's our son making out at school?
  • The business made out better than expected and profits were slightly up.
  • How is Frank making out in his new job?
  • Who is making out better right now?
  • How did you make out in the contest?

 

5. 사실이 아닌 것을 사실인 것 마냥 말하다 (pretend)
- to say that something is true when it is not

  • The situation was never as bad as the media made out.
  • He made out that he had been robbed
  • He made himself out to be a millionaire.
  • He made out that he knew nothing about the robbery.
  • Don't make out like you know the answer!
  • He made out that he had been living in Paris all year.

  • He made out that he'd won the lottery.

 

6. to kiss passionately
- to kiss, embrace, or fondle with sexual passion

7. 기입하다/작성하다- to write something such as a bill or cheque
- to write all the required information onto a form

Synonyms : complete, fill in, fill out
