오늘 알아 볼 표현은 바로 Under the weather 입니다.
- If you say that you're under the weather, you mean that you feel slightly ill
- If someone is or feels under the weather, they feel ill
여러분은 이 표현이 어떤 의미일거라고 생각하셨어요? 영영사전에서 그 뜻을 살펴보니 표현과는 조금 엉뚱하게 "몸 상태가 좋지 않은/몸이 좀 안좋은"의 의미입니다. 어떻게 under the weather가 이런 의미로 쓰이게 된걸까요? 궁금하지 않으세요?
The term under the weather is a nautical term from the days of old sailing ships. Any sailor who was feeling ill would be sent below deck to protect him from the weather
- 예전 항해 시절에서 시작된 표현으로 선원이 뱃멀미나 또는 몸 상태가 좋은 않았을때, 험한 날씨로부터 덜 힘들게 하기 위해서 그 선원을 주 갑판 밑으로 보내 회복할 수 있도록 그곳에서 머물게 한것에서 시작된 표현인것으로 보입니다.
이렇게 어원을 이해를 표현을 익히게 되면 그 표현을 이해하고 기억하는데 큰 도움이 되는것 같습니다 ^^.
