[영어표현] 날씨 영어로 어떻게 표현할까?

Small talk라고 들어보셨죠? 잘 모르는 사람과 만났을 때 어색한 분위기를 누그러뜨리는 위해 나누는 가벼운 대화를 의미하는데요, 그 small talk로 가장 자주 쓰이는 주제중 하나가 아마도 날씨(weather) 일겁니다. 그래서 오늘은 이 날씨에 대한 여러 영어표현을 모아서 공부해보려고 합니다.

날씨에 대한 기본 표현은 알고 계실겁니다. 하지만 혹시 날씨에 대해 이야기 할때 같은 표현을 계속해서 반복해서 사용하고 계시지는 않나요?? 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 표현외에도 날씨를 묘사하는 매우 많은 표현들이 있답니다. 앞서 이야기한것처럼 날씨가 small talk의 아주 좋은 대화 소재이기 때문에 날씨와 관련된 표현을 자신의 것으로 마스터 한다면 외국인과 만나서 small talk를 하는데 자신감이 생길겁니다. 그리고 자신감이 생기면 그 small talk가 즐거워지고 그렇게 되면 보다 적극적으로 대화를 할 수 있게 되겠죠. 이렇게 영어에 대한 자신감이라는 근육이 발달할겁니다.

제가 추천드리고 싶은 방법은 .... 우선 모든 표현을 다 내것으로 만들겠다고 욕심부리는것보다는 여러분이 보기에 익히기 쉬워 보이는 표현을 날씨별로 하나씩만 골라서 우선 그것만 확실히 외우시는걸 추천드립니다. 표현이 너무 많으면 다 외우기도 힘들고 또 막상 대화하다가 쓰려고 하면 어떤걸 꺼내 써야 할지 머릿속이 복잡해지고 결국에는 못써먹게 되는 경우가 있거든요. 그래서 딱 하나씩만 우선 확실히 외워서 그 날씨가 되면 바로 써먹을 수 있도록 하는게 가장 좋은 방법이지 않을까 싶습니다. 그렇게 확실히 내 표현이 됐다~ 이때 또 추가로 익혀도 좋은 방법이 될 것 같아서 제 생각을 전해드렸습니다.

Sunny / Nice weather : 화창한 날씨 표현

Sunny & Nice

hot / boiling / sizzling / scorching / burning: 엄~청 무더운 날씨 (=very hot)

Hot

It's hot and sticky (Sticky는 '끈적끈적한'이란 뜻인데 습도가 높아서 피부가 끈적거리는 불쾌지수가 높은 날씨를 의미합니다.

Boiling (=very hot)

Sizzling (=very hot)

바베큐 파티! 삽겹살이 지글지글 익고 있을때 sizzling이라고 표현할 수 있는데 날씨가 엄청 더울때 지글지글 익는 날씨라고 해서 sizzling을 사용합니다.

Scorching (=very hot)

Burning

Heatwave (폭염)

a period of time such as a few weeks when the weather is much hotter than usual

muggy / humid / thick air - 후덥지근한/덥고 습한 날씨

Muggy

When the weather is muggy, it is unpleasantly warm and the air contains a lot of water

Humid

It's humid. It feels like you're swimming outside

Not a cloud in the sky! (문장앞에 There is를 붙이주않고 말하면 보다 캐주얼한 표현)

wispy clouds - (Wisp는 a small, thin line of clou/smoke/steam 뜻으로 작고 얇은 몇가닥의 구름 정도로 이해하시면 될 것 같아요)

with clouds in the sky and therefore not bright and sunny

Cloudy 와 Overcast의 차이?

Overcast는 구름이 하늘을 거의 100% 덥는다고 봐도 될 만큼 구름 사이로 하늘을 보기 힘든 날씨이고 Cloudy도 마찬가지로 하늘이 구름으로 가득하지만 구름 사이로 하늘을 볼 수 있는 정도의 차이라고 보시면 되겠습니다

바람 표현 - windy / breezy / blustery

Windy / Breezy / Blustery 모두 바람에 대한 표현인데 어떤 차이가 있을까?

- National Weather Service(미국 기상청)에 따르면 아래와 같습니다.

Breezy : 풍속이 15-25mph - mild weather
Blustery : 풍속이 15-25mph - cold weather
Windy : 풍속이 20-30mph 사이

Breezy와 Blustery는 바람의 세기는 비슷한데 Breey는 온화하고 기분좋은 바람의 느낌인데 반해 Blustery는 다소 추운 날씨에 부는 바람으로 이해하시면 되겠습니다. 그리고 셋중에서는 windy의 바람세기가 가장 크네요. 우리가 말할때 바람의 세기를 계산하고 말하지는 않지만 그래도 개념정도를 알고 있다면 보다 상황에 맞는 적절한 표현을 쓸 수 있지 않을까요? ^^

비/폭우에 관한 표현 - Rain/spitting/drizzling/puring/coming down

Rain / wet / come down

It's really coming down out there - 이 표현은 눈이 내린다고 할때도 사용할 수 있답니다

Spitting

to rain very slightly

Drizzling

to rain in small light drops

이 세가지 표현은 ' Visibility' 시계와 (눈으로 볼 수 있는 범위) 관련된 표현입니다.

Cold - 추위와 관련된 표현
