안녕하세요? 스마트폰이 보급화된 후 달라진 지하철 속 풍경..때로는 씁쓸하기까지 합니다만 정말 많은 사람들이 휴대폰 액정만 바로보고 있죠. 이렇게 휴대폰에서 눈을 못뗀다..라고 영어로 말하고 싶을때 쓸 수 있는 표현이 있습니다..그건 바로 "Be glued to"입니다.

Be glued to something : to be unable to stop watching something / to look at something with all your attention If you say that someone is glued to something, you mean that they are giving it all their attention

Glue가 "접착제"라는 명사, 또는 "붙이다"라는 동사로도 쓰입니다. 그래서 Be gluded to 라고 하면 ~에 시선이 딱 달라붙어서 딴건 못하고 있는 상황을 말해요..영여사전을 해석해보면 "어떤거를 보는걸 멈출 수 없다", "완전 몰입해서 무언가를 보다" 이정도로 이해할 수 있을 것 같아요.   He's been glued to that book for the entire camping trip. I wish he would take a break and enjoy the scenery. He was glued to the TV when the Olympics were on Dad was glued to the TV all day long Conor's kinds are always glued to the television.  They don't even say hello when we come over He spends every evening glued to the TV Her eyes were glued to the screen (=She did not stop watching it)

Keep your eyes glued to something : If you say that someone keeps their eyes glued to something, you mean that they are watching it with all their attention 이렇게도 비슷한 의미를 표현할 수 있겠네요.    ex) He kept his eyes glued to the clock

Kids who are glued to screens are couch potatoes by 5 2020년 1월 29일 New York Post 기사 제목입니다. 기사 내용을 보니 3세정도까지 TV를 보는 아이들은 5살이 됐을땐  Couch potator가 된다라는 연구결과를 이야기 하고 있습니다.   Couch potato : A couch potato is someone who spends most of their time watching television and does not exercise or have any interesting hobbies (오랫동안 가만히 앉아 티비만 보는 사람)

Reachers warn staying glued to your phone in social settings causes others to feel that they don't belong. 아~~ 이거 정말 심각한 문제인것 같아요...상대방과 대화중인데도 눈과 손은 핸드폰에 ....이건 정말 예의가 아니라고 봅니다....절대 하지 말아야 할 행동인데...이런 행동을 Phone과 Snubbing(냉대)를 합쳐 Phubbing이라고 해요. This is one of my pet peeves!!!   Phubbing - the practice of ignoring someone who is speaking to you by looking at your phone, can negatively affect people's self-esteem.
